Del inglés medio iland, del inglés antiguo īġland, de íg ("isla") y land, lǫnd ("tierra")[1]. La ⟨s⟩ en la grafía moderna es influencia del francés isle, que no es un cognado etimológico. Compárese el neerlandés eiland o el nórdico antiguo eyland.
